Department Of Neurosurgery

​The Department of Neurosurgery, affiliated with Dow University of Health Sciences was shifted to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma in February 2017 with the aim to provide free-of-cost and dignified, exemplary care and treatment to patients suffering from brain and spinal ailments, from Sindh and across Pakistan. Our mission is to treat life threatening and debilitating cranio-spinal conditions by p​roviding state-of-art care to patients. 

The Neurosurgery department at SMBBIT is a 63-bed ward including, 14 bed High Dependency Unit (HDU) dedicated for neurosurgical patients. Along with these patients, the department also caters to patients accommodated in the Trauma bay, Ventilation Bay, Trauma General ICU & HDU and Covid-19 ICU, More than 100 patients at a single time are under care of the Neurosurgery department. 

Patients with life or nerve threatening conditions either due to trauma or due to other pathologies are managed via emergency department, which includes performing life-saving surgical procedures. Meanwhile, patients with long standing or less critical conditions are evaluated and admitted through outpatient department (OPD) situated in Dr. Ruth K. M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi OPD complex. 

The department is providing completely free of cost surgery along with pre-operative and post-operative care to all its patients. The Department of Neurosurgery has been provided with two dedicated operation theatres for elective cases which run 6 days a week, operating on elective cases which include an average of 5 tumor cases (usually cancers) a week. 

The department has ambition to start further advancement for delivering better care to the patients, especially related to functional neurosurgery. We also plan to expand our services related to vascular pathologies of the brain. The department with its affiliation with Dow University of Health Sciences is also serving as a teaching platform for undergraduate as well as post-graduate doctors. The department has trained many neurosurgeons that are practicing in reputed institutions of this country as well as abroad.
